The article 3D Modeling: History, Software Types, and Techniques by Awa is a journey into the 3D modeling world. Awa starts by talking about the history and where it all began, all the way back in 300 BC. where a mathematician, Euclid from ancient Greece, was thinking about geometric shapes and their properties; then a French mathematician, René Descartes, gave the ideas a new name, “analytical geometry” and this was the foundation of what became 3D modeling. Next, they fast forward to when computers existed in the 1950s were few and rare, then in the 1960s, artists and architects started messing around with computers, and it was very basic stuff. Then, a man named Ivan Sutherland came up with Sketchpad, which was the first CAD software. Then, during all of this computer stuff, there was a guy from the Netherlands named Ton Roosendaal who stood out. He started a place called NeoGeo in 1989, where they made cool 3D animations. They even made their own software, like Blender. While the basic Blender was free, some fancy parts needed money to keep the lights on. But here’s where Roosendaal did something astonishing; he didn’t let Blender die and fought to buy it back and then gave it away for free. This essentially gave a superpower to everyone, unlike big, expensive software like Autodesk. Overall, learning the history of 3D modeling software was very interesting, and learning how Blender came to be free and one of the most used 3D modeling software programs today.
