The first time in class when we were watching/listening to the video of “four minutes and thirty three seconds” it took me probably a minute to understand that there was no sound and then to realize this was a part of the performance after more silence was heard. It definitely was a different performance than what I was expecting. I honestly have never tried to imagine music the way John Cage did and it definitely was interesting to listen to and learn his perspective of music and performing. I think what he did was brave and it was what he wanted to show everyone even though not everyone would be accepting of it. I appreciate that John Cage believed music is everywhere and can be found everywhere. I personally feel like if I had been at one of his concerts in person I would not have understood it and probably would be upset with the performance. I do not agree with John Cage and his outlook on music; I feel like music should have thought out sounds and organization. I appreciate music when it has a more organization to the song. I do appreciate John’s view of music and am not bothered by his performance and courage to do what others had never done or tried. I enjoy the music he creates just not enough; I just personally feel like he could have tried to introduce it in a way people would have accepted and appreciated it more.
